Partner
Charles Law has been prominent in the music industry for nearly
25 years. He joined EMI Records Limited in 1980 and spent
61/2 years gaining experience in the business affairs department,
negotiating deals with several key acts, including Pet Shop
Boys and The Smiths, being seconded to work with the Spanish
and Mexican companies in the EMI Group, and increasingly taking
a role in industry negotiations, representing EMI Records
at BPI meetings.
Charles left for a career change into other areas of law,
but re-entered the music industry in 1989 when he joined Harbottle
& Lewis where he spent 11 years working right across the
music industry both in the traditional areas of recordings,
publishing and management and then increasingly in new media
areas and live events, sponsorship and film soundtracks.
Charles' increasing involvement with the corporate side of
the music industry led him to join Denton Wilde Sapte in May
2001 where he developed his practice across the board, still
representing artists including Will Young and Gareth Gates
as well as sponsorship and endorsement deals for major corporations,
licensing with sporting bodies, work with the BBC and independent
television production companies and book publishing deals.
His move to WGS reflects a desire to work in a smaller environment
so that he can choose the work that interests him across the
whole range of his experience. It also enables him further
to develop his practice of acting in various areas for leading
personalities and the licensing of sporting rights.
